LASIK Timeline

Initial Contact

When you contact our office, your preliminary questions will be answered and you will be provided with detailed LASIK information. A free consultation appointment is then scheduled. We will follow-up by sending additional LASIK information, news articles or clinical data that is pertinent or that you request.

Free Vision Screening Consultation

This in-depth, personal screening with Dr. Miller, will take approximately 30-50 minutes of your time - or however much time is needed for you to gain a clear and comfortable understanding of the benefits and risks of laser vision correction. The doctor will determine if you are a good candidate, and for which particular procedure(s). Alternatives to LASIK will also be discussed, as they pertain to your own eyes, based on health, lifestyle and other factors.

Pre-Operative Eye Exam

This extensive pre-surgical eye examination will last about 90 minutes. You should plan to be out of your soft contact lenses for two weeks prior to this exam. Hard lenses should be discontinued for three weeks.

Myriad ophthalmic tests will be performed to measure your vision to ensure the success of your operation. The informed consent portion of the procedure will also take place during this time.

If you are having a CustomVue treatment, we will schedule a 30 minute WaveScan appointment at the Laser Center prior to your LASIK procedure.

Your LASIK Procedure

Plan on being at the San Diego Eye Bank for about 50 minutes total, although the actual procedure takes about 10 minutes per eye. You will need to have someone drive you to and from the Eye Bank on the day of your procedure. Dr. Miller will call you himself, later that evening to personally check on you.

1 Day Post-Op Visit

95% of our patients are able to drive themselves to our office for this first post-operative eye examination on the day following their procedure. This visit will last about 15 minutes. You should be able to go directly on to work, school or play immediately afterward. Some patients with higher levels of myopia, hyperopia and/or astigmatism may experience a little more of an adjustment period. All of this will be explained to you, pre-operatively.

Post-Operative Visits

You will attend an additional 3 to 5 post-operative visits with Dr. Miller throughout the remainder of a year. These visits are to check on your visual progress and will last approximately 15 minutes each. Once your vision is stable, your remaining follow-up visits may be performed by your own, trusted Optometrist, if you so desire.

This Timeline is used for example purposes only. Please keep in mind that each individual may require more or less time, testing, attention and information on a case by case basis.
