Cataracts
What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye.
The lens normally focuses light on the retina. When the lens becomes cloudy
as a result of aging changes in its fibers a cataract has developed and
interferes with light focusing.

Treatment
When the vision of either eye in a patient deteriorates to less than useful
levels and cannot be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses, treatment
should be considered. The only treatment for cataracts is surgical. The
cloudy portion of the lens must be removed and replaced with a clear artificial
lens.
A new technique has made it possible to remove cataracts using only eye
drop anesthesia and a clear corneal incision without sutures. The operation
takes approximately 20 minutes to perform and normally no eye patch is
required. The operation is successful in over 95% of eyes and useful vision
usually occurs within a few hours following surgery. Normal activity can
be usually resumed the following day.
Currently, lasers are being investigated for cataract surgery, but from a clinical
point of view throughout the world, cataracts are now removed with ultra-sound
"phacoemulsification" surgery. In some cases, cloudy tissue develops on
the capsule holding the lens implant, and a laser can be used to remove
this type of scarring (often called a "secondary cataract").
We will be happy to examine your eyes, and talk about the specific treatment
of your cataract.
